Summer School 2008
Why a summer program in Switzerland?
The Universities of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (HES) set a goal to contribute to economic development and assume a leading role in creating and enhancing partnerships with international universities.
At the Engineering School of Enology at Changins (EIC), the only Enology school in the HES system, we have decided to take the challenge to increase visibility in the domain of Higher Education and provide training opportunities for students, which will thus lead to an added value of their education as well as contribute to the their personal achievements in future careers.
The EIC’s goal is to bring together Viticulture and Enology students from the world over to share winemaking and viticulture techniques specific to their home regions. Switzerland is geographically located in the heart of Europe, where winemaking culture is ancient and highly varied from New World styles. The “New World” and “Old World” generally differ not only in their organizational systems, but also more specifically in their wine and food cultures.
For 4 weeks during the summer 2008, we will host a summer school course that will begin to bridge the gap between North America and Europe and facilitate students from the New and Old winemaking Worlds to come and work together, share their ideas and learn from each other.
- The students’ future employment must also be considered. Fully trained, experienced wine professionals are in high demand today and it is necessary that they are able to work across international and cultural boundaries.
- An international experience through study abroad contributes to achieve academic, professional and personal goals.
- The ability to consider issues from an international perspective helps the student approach home-issues more creatively and allows for better comfort and strength in his or her self-awareness.
- Enhancing education by studying abroad will set the student apart by building a strong resume extremely important in the wine industry today.
What are the exact dates?
The program will begin on Monday, June 23 and end on Friday, July 18, 2008.
What will the contents be?
We are offering a “Wine and Society” month long program which aims at developing professional activities, while building the capacity of individuals to deepen their understanding, and strengthen their communication skills. The students will interact, influence and enjoy constructive relationships when working at an international level despite the relevant cultural boundaries.
The HES campus at Changins will become an international center that catalyzes the synergy of young winemakers from European and North American continents.
This is a great opportunity for participating North American Universities (Fresno State University, Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, and Brock University) to discover Swiss and European wine culture and winemaking techniques.
All lectures, conferences and tours will be conducted in English. Click here to learn more about the involved professors
